When someone searches "yoga instructor JLT" or "physics tutor Abu Dhabi", Google tries to show nearby, relevant and trusted providers. Local SEO is the work of making sure you are one of them. The good news for freelancers: most of it is free, and you can do it yourself in an afternoon.
What local SEO actually means
Google's local results — the map with three businesses under it, plus the normal results below — are influenced by three broad factors that Google itself describes: relevance (how well you match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the area named), and prominence (how well known and trusted you are, including reviews and links). You cannot change distance, but you can work on the other two.
Step 1: Set up your Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and in local results. It is the single most important local SEO step.
- Go to Google Business Profile and sign in with a Google account you control.
- Enter your business name exactly as you use it — do not stuff keywords into the name, as that can get a profile suspended.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, for example "Tutor", "Personal trainer" or "Website designer".
- If clients do not visit you, set yourself up as a service-area business: hide your address and list the areas you serve instead.
- Complete verification. Google may ask for a video, a phone or email code, or another method depending on your business.
Then fill in everything: hours, services, a clear description, your website link, your WhatsApp or phone number, and real photos of you at work.
Step 2: Collect reviews — steadily
Reviews are one of the strongest prominence signals, and they persuade real people too. Ask every happy client for a review, and make it easy: share your direct review link in WhatsApp right after a good session. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and professionally. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them — it breaks Google's policies and can get reviews removed.
Step 3: Optimise your website for your area
Your website supports your Google profile. Make sure it clearly says what you do and where:
- Page title: include your service and location, e.g. "Personal Trainer in Dubai Marina | Sara Fitness".
- Headings and text: mention the neighbourhoods and emirates you serve naturally in your copy.
- Contact details: keep your business name, phone and area identical everywhere online.
- Service pages: a separate page for each main service beats one page that lists everything.
- Mobile speed: local searches are mostly on phones, so a fast site matters — see our mobile speed guide.
Step 4: Connect Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a free tool that shows which searches bring people to your site and alerts you to problems. Verify your website, submit your sitemap, and check the "Performance" report monthly to see which keywords are gaining impressions.
Step 5: Get listed in the right places
Consistent listings on reputable directories, local community sites and professional associations reinforce that your business is real. Quality beats quantity — a handful of relevant listings is better than hundreds of spammy directories.
Step 6: Publish helpful content
Articles that answer your clients' questions — "How many sessions a week should a beginner train?" or "When should my child start IGCSE revision?" — show expertise and give Google more reasons to show your site. Aim for quality over volume; one genuinely useful article a month is plenty.
How long does local SEO take?
A new Google Business Profile can start appearing for your own name within days. Ranking for competitive searches such as "personal trainer Dubai" typically takes months of steady reviews, content and consistency. There are no shortcuts worth taking — anyone promising "#1 on Google in a week" should be avoided.
